Sennay Ghebreab in 'De kennis van nu'

The battle between the human being and the computer

COMMIT/researcher Sennay Ghebreab (INFINITI) talks with Dutch astronaut Andre Kuipers about face recognition in the Dutch tv-programme 'De kennis van nu'.

For years researchers have been trying to find out how the human brain recognizes faces. But it is still a mysterious proces. Detective Chief Inspector Mick Neville set up a team of Super Recognisers in London and states that computers will never be as good in facial recognition as human beings.

Self learning method

Sennay Ghebreab, researcher Artificial Intelligence at the University of Amsterdam, doesn't agree with Detective Neville. His research team came up with the 'self learning' method. In this method the computer processes a large amount of pictures and starts counting certain characteristics in a certain context by itself. This way the computer creates a kind of visual alphabet that can be used with the identification of an image.
