Both Henri Bal and Arnold Smeulders have received an invitation to join the prestigious Academia Europaea. Membership of the Academia Europaea is a recognition of skill and knowledge in the international field of research.
There are only about 10 Dutch Computer Scientists in the Academia, among them Bart Jacobs RU (since 2012) Jan Bergstra UvA (since 2011), Johan van Benthum UvA (since 1991), Jan van Leeuwen UU (since 2006) and Jan Willem Klop VU University (since 2010). The invitation to join the Academia can only be received by peer-reviews.
The Academia Europaea was founded in 1988, and has over 2,000 members from thirty five European countries and eight non-European countries. The membership includes leading experts from the physical sciences and technology, biological sciences and medicine, mathematics, the letters and humanities, social and cognitive sciences, economics and the law.
